The material follows the project
The Siolim villa used laterite specified with the architect. The Porvorim office conversion used hollow concrete blocks for toilet partitions within its fit-out scope. We do not use those choices as proof that one unit is suitable for every wall.
Dimensions, exposure, structure, finish and the designer's requirements govern the specification. Structural use of unreinforced masonry may require IS 1905 and other applicable standards as identified by the responsible professional. A product described as “equivalent” still needs appropriate approval before substitution.
Checks before plaster hides the work
We review setting out, line, level, plumb, bonds/joints, openings, lintel positions and specified connections before the surface is covered. Junctions with RCC and the required treatment follow the project details.
Plumbing and electrical routes need coordination at this stage. Reopening a finished wall because an agreed service position was overlooked adds disruption. See the quality-check approach.
Understand the measurement
For a simple wall, face area starts with length × height, subject to the agreed opening deductions. Thickness and material remain part of the specification.
Example: a 10 ft × 10 ft wall has 100 sq ft of masonry face. Plaster on both faces covers 200 sq ft of treated surface. It is not 200 sq ft of brickwork and it is not priced from the room's floor area.
The cost guide separates materials-and-labour from labour-only masonry and plaster examples. Laterite is assessed against its own delivered unit, thickness and mortar specification; a published brick rate is not a laterite rate.
What a masonry works estimate includes
The quote identifies wall type, thickness, quantity, unit, rate, finish and exclusions. It also allocates materials, handling, scaffolding, equipment and debris. Plaster is listed separately unless expressly included.
If you need plastering services for an existing surface, describe what is being removed and why. New-work plaster rates do not automatically cover hacking, defect repair or difficult access.
Questions about walling and plaster
I am comparing local masonry contractors. What should I check?+
Ask masonry companies to quote the same wall material, thickness, dimensions and finish. If you need brick wall builders, check whether their price includes materials, lintels, scaffolding, service openings and plaster, or walling alone. For laterite or blockwork, use that material’s specification rather than assuming a brickwork rate applies.
Can you handle masonry for an office or guesthouse?+
Yes, for an agreed civil scope. When appointing commercial masonry contractors, confirm the partition layout, service routes, finish and handover condition for the fit-out team. In our Porvorim office project, hollow concrete block partitions formed the new toilet block; the civil work and separate fit-out responsibilities were defined before execution. I have a cracked wall. Can you just fill and plaster it?+
We assess the symptom and likely scope first. Movement or structural uncertainty needs the responsible engineer's review. Cosmetic filling is not presented as a remedy for an unresolved structural cause.
Can I book bricklaying work and plastering together?+
Yes, where both are included. The quotation identifies the masonry quantity and plaster faces separately, along with preparation, finish and curing requirements. That makes the scope easier to compare and measure.
Can I supply the blocks and pay you for labour only?+
Yes, by agreement. The specification, quantities, delivery, storage, equipment and suitability checks need to be allocated. We notify you about unsuitable or missing supplies rather than assuming any delivered material is accepted.
I need only a small partition. Will you consider it?+
We generally consider civil jobs from ₹15,000, subject to practical access and scope. Send dimensions and photos first. Any inspection or mobilisation charge is confirmed before booking.
